Privacy policy

Others helps a household keep track of what it has and, when you choose, lets you share and borrow with neighbors. This page says what we collect, who else handles it, how long we keep it, and how to delete it.
What we collect
- Account: your name and email address, and a hash of your password if you set one. We never store the password itself. If you sign in with Google, we store the link to your Google account and no Google password.
- Household: the household name and, if you enter them, city, state, and ZIP code. Street address and map coordinates are not asked for today; if a later feature asks, they will be shown only to your own household.
- Inventory: the food and other items you record, with quantities, dates, and notes. Food is visible only inside your household and is never shared with neighbors or anyone else.
- Photos and barcodes: when you use the camera, the photo is sent to our photo-reading service (below) and discarded once it answers. We do not store the photo. A scanned barcode is looked up in a shared product database and the product's name, brand, and category are cached for everyone; nothing about your household is attached to it.
- Security records: to limit abuse of sign-in and sign-up, we keep a keyed hash of your IP address and of the email address involved for 24 hours. The hash cannot be turned back into the address without our secret key.
Who else handles it
We do not sell your data and we do not use advertising trackers. These services process data on our behalf, each for one job:
- Vercel hosts the application and sees the requests your browser makes.
- Supabase stores the database, in the United States (us-east-1).
- Resend sends our email: confirmation links, password resets, and notices you ask for.
- Google, only if you sign in with Google; Google's own privacy policy governs what Google keeps.
- Anthropic reads package photos you take, to fill in a product's name, size, and dates. The photo and nothing else is sent; it is not used to train their models under the terms we use them on.
- Open Food Facts, a public database, receives the barcode you scan and our contact address, and nothing about you.
Sharing with neighbors
Neighborhood sharing is still being built; today nothing you record is visible outside your household. When it arrives, the rules will be these, and this page will be updated the day they take effect: nothing is visible to another household unless you turn on neighborhood sharing and mark a specific item as shareable. Even then, another household sees your household name, your neighborhood, and an approximate distance — never your address, and never your food. Every neighbor email will carry a link that stops those emails for your household without signing in.
Cookies
One cookie, which keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. No analytics or advertising cookies.
How long we keep it
- Accounts that never confirm their email address are deleted after 7 days.
- Confirmation links last 24 hours and reset links 1 hour; both are single use and stored only as a hash.
- The security records above are deleted after 24 hours.
- Everything else is kept until you delete it or delete your account.
Deleting your account
Settings → Delete my account. It removes your sign-in immediately. If you are the last member of your household, the household and everything in it goes too. If other members remain, the household stays with them. Our database provider may hold a backup copy for a short period afterwards.
Children
Others is not for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
