Privacy policy

Effective October 6, 2026. Others is operated by Gettoma LLC.

Others helps a household keep track of what it has and, when you choose, lets you share and borrow with neighbors. This page says what we collect, who else handles it, how long we keep it, and how to delete it.

What we collect

  • Account: your name and email address, and a hash of your password if you set one. We never store the password itself. If you sign in with Google, we store the link to your Google account and no Google password.
  • Household: the household name and, if you enter them, city, state, and ZIP code. Street address and map coordinates are not asked for today; if a later feature asks, they will be shown only to your own household.
  • Inventory: the food and other items you record, with quantities, dates, and notes. Food is visible only inside your household and is never shared with neighbors or anyone else.
  • Photos: photos you add to food or things are stored, privately, in your household's own folder. Before a photo is stored we remove the information a phone attaches to it, including where it was taken. A label you photograph to have it read (below) is kept as that item's photo unless you remove it. Who can see photos is under “Sharing with neighbors.”
  • Barcodes: a scanned barcode is looked up in a shared product database, and the product's name, brand, category, and picture address are cached for everyone; nothing about your household is attached to it. If the product has a picture, our server copies it into your household's folder, so your phone never contacts the product database itself.
  • Neighborhood activity: requests you post, replies you send, messages you exchange with a household about a reply, loans you arrange (the thing, the dates, any agreed price, and each step from hand-over to return), the neighborhood you join, households you block, and records of which neighbor emails were sent, so nobody is emailed twice about the same request.
  • Security records: to limit abuse of sign-in and sign-up, we keep a keyed hash of your IP address and of the email address involved for 24 hours. The hash cannot be turned back into the address without our secret key.

Who else handles it

We do not sell your data and we do not use advertising trackers. These services process data on our behalf, each for one job:

  • Vercel hosts the application and sees the requests your browser makes.
  • Supabase stores the database and the photos, in the United States (us-east-1). Photos are in a private store reachable only through Others, which checks who is asking before showing one.
  • Resend sends our email: confirmation links, password resets, household invitations to the address you enter, neighbor request and reply notices, and the weekly summary if you turn it on.
  • Google, only if you sign in with Google; Google's own privacy policy governs what Google keeps.
  • Anthropic provides the AI. It reads package photos you take, to fill in a product's name, size, and dates; only the photo is sent. When a neighbor posts a request, it compares the request's wording with the names, descriptions, and conditions of things neighbors have made available, to decide who to tell. It is sent no names of people or households, no addresses, and no food. Under the terms we use it on, none of this is used to train their models.
  • Sentry receives error reports when something breaks: the error, the page, and the type of browser or server. We have switched off everything else it can collect — no IP address, cookies, or anything you typed or uploaded.
  • Open Food Facts, a public database, receives the barcode you scan and our contact address, and nothing about you.

Sharing with neighbors

Sharing happens only inside a neighborhood you join with its invite code. Other households there see your household's name and your neighborhood's name — never your address, never who lives with you, never your email, and never your food. Beyond that, they see only what you choose to put in front of them:

  • Requests you post, and the replies you send them. A conversation under a reply, and a loan you arrange, are seen only by your household and that one other household.
  • A thing you offer in a reply, to the household you reply to: its name, description, condition, whether you would lend, give, rent, or sell it and at what price, and its photos.
  • A thing you mark as available, the same way, to households in your neighborhood — but only while your household also has neighbor requests turned on. Turning either off hides it again straight away, photos included.

Your food and its photos are never shown to anyone outside your household. Every neighbor request email carries a link that stops those emails for your household without signing in, and you can block a household so neither of you sees the other. The household that started a neighborhood can change its invite code and remove a household from it; it gains no other access to anyone's data.

Cookies

A sign-in cookie keeps you signed in for up to 30 days, and two more cookies protect the sign-in itself. If you open a household invitation while signed out, one more holds the invitation for up to 7 days so it survives creating an account. No analytics or advertising cookies.

How long we keep it

  • Accounts that never confirm their email address are deleted after 7 days.
  • Confirmation links last 24 hours and reset links 1 hour; both are single use and stored only as a hash.
  • The security records above are deleted after 24 hours.
  • A photo is deleted when you remove or replace it, or delete the item. A photo added to a form you then cancel stays stored privately until your household is deleted.
  • Household invitations, with the email address they were sent to, are kept until the household is deleted.
  • Everything else is kept until you delete it or delete your account.

Deleting your account

Settings → Delete my account. It removes your sign-in immediately. If you are the last member of your household, the household and everything in it goes too, photos included. If other members remain, the household stays with them. Our database provider may hold a backup copy for a short period afterwards.

Children

Others is not for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
